Pacific & Caribbean Coasts

On this journey we will explore both the Pacific and Caribbean coastal forests as well as the cloud forests of the mountainous interior and south almost to the border of Panama. An ideal adventure for people seriously interested in observing exotic plants, birds and animals in an astonishing pristine environment.

Here on the "Bridge of the Americas" we find plants that are peculiar to both north and south, providing a wonderful richness and diversity that can be found nowhere else in the world. The country has over 1200 species of classified orchids with hundreds yet to be listed, more than 900 species of ferns, 30 species of heliconia and more epiphytic flora than all of the Mayan Empire. We will also see
Arenal volcano and Poas volcano, two of Costa Rica's 69 volcanos.

We include visits to
Monteverde cloud forest, Tabacon Hot Springs, Cano Island biological reserve, Corcovado and Tortuguero National Parks.

Rainforest plants, birds and animals

By small motor boats we explore the waterways from our jungle lodges observing endemic plants and doing some bird watching along the way.

Over 205 species of mammals and 849 species of resident birds can be found here. Costa Rica is a birder's dream. Along with 52 species of hummingbirds, 49 warblers, 45 tanagers, the Resplendent Quetzal, puffbirds, motmots, toucans and macaws, you might even see (and hear) a Giant Tinamou, Pacific Screech Owl and Three-wattled Bellbird.

Rare and exotic best describe other residents of this natural wonderland including Howler monkeys, tapir, jaguar, Golden Toad, Clear-winged butterfly, armadillo, Three-toed Sloth and Great Potoo to name a few. After staying overnight in or near any of the reserves, nature's morning wake up call is something few people will ever forget.

Meet the people

Special arrangements have been made for members of this tour to meet with local experts in ornithology, botany, local history and nature conservation. These are the people who know intimate details that will truly enhance your knowledge and enjoyment of each place you visit.

A peaceful country

Costa Rica is a peaceful and democratic nation, respected for its environment protection and ecological conservation efforts.

In 1949, the democratic government of Costa Rica disbanded its military forces and since then have diverted its expenditure to the protection of its natural heritage areas in national parks and biological research reserves.

It is also important to point out that the national parks and reserves have areas of geological and geophysical interest, such as active volcanos, hot springs, caves and relict mountains areas of historic and archaeological interest, such as pre-Colombian settlements; areas of scenic beauty and areas of great importance to conservation such as islands where the brown pelican and magnificent frigatebird nest, or enclaves with the last remaining stands of Meso-American dry forest.
