Tour starts: 10 April, 2004
Since 1870 in Japan, around the time of The Last Samurai, much has changed.
Modernization and cultural changes have created a very different Japan.
On this tour we will take you to feel some of the atmosphere
that still remains today, from the time of the Samurai.

Old World Japan

See more of "old world" Japan as well as the "must see" places on this 8 day fully escorted tour.

Enjoy the elegant charm of traditional Japan with authentic Ryokan accommodation, tea ceremony, Zen gardens, picturesque wooden architecture and even a real ninja house.

Explore the hidden corners of a real Japanese Castle, wander through a bamboo forest and along an old canal with cascading Cherry Blossoms. Stroll down narrow lanes leading to noodle bars and sake shops and the old Geisha quarter, where even today we often see one on her way to work.

Experience the hard to find remnants from an earlier Japan, often sort after by western travellers but hard to find in a country where very little English is spoken. This special tour will introduce you to some traditional customs and crafts that still influence the people and lifestyle of today's Japan.

'Samurai Joe' Okada

No, you are not likely to meet Tom Cruise on this tour, but your host travelling with you throughout this tour will be 'Samurai Joe' Okada, arguably Japan`s most famous modern day Samurai.

Joe is an author, historian and professional tour guide but is probably more internationally know for his Samurai swordsmanship show. He has appeared in numerous theatre performances and on international TV including the David Letterman Show.

Being an entertainer and showman from the old school, Joe adds an aura of authenticity to your tour. His humorous yet factual interpretation of the world of the Samurai, reveals Joe`s personality as an asset that he is not shy to put in the lime light. Yes, that is his photo at the top of this page.

The Last Samurai locations visit

This tour will not only take you to locations in Japan where The Last Samurai was filmed ( not all filming was done in New Zealand ) but also take you to places represented in the movie. Here you will experience Japanese food, sleeping in a room with sliding paper doors and tatami floors and enjoy the fun of a traditional Japanese Spa bath house.

And, your visit to Himeji Castle, to explore to authentic original wooden structure, climb the steep ladder steps, roam through the battlements and to learn what life was really like inside a castle, will be something you will always remember.
