Special
Demonstrations & Exclusive Studio Access
Destination Management
has been operating pottery and craft tours to Japan since 1988. We have
personal contact with artisans who produce pottery, washi ( hand made
paper ), braid, lacquerware, folding fans, wood carving, dolls, kimonos
and many more traditional products.
Visit 6 ancient kiln sites in central Honshu including Mino, Seto, Bizen,
Shigaraki, Tachikui and Tamba as well as Kyoto and Nara.
On this tour, you will be able to meet potters and craft artisans in
their studios and workshops as well as seeing demonstrations of their
production methods.
Kenji Kato, Hiroshi Kondo, Fujiwara family, Masato Ohshio and Wataru
Ohkami are just a few of the great potters we plan to visit .
Tokoname
Workshops & Homestay
Private homestay accommodation
in Tokoname is a highlight of this cross cultural experience. For 9
nights you will be staying in private homes where our host families
are waiting to give you an insight into the true Japanese way of life.
This is a rare opportunity to really meet the people and get behind
the facade.... something other travellers never get by staying in hotels.
In addition, you will be receiving direction and demonstrations from
several potters in Tokoname during your 10 days in this historic ceramics
centre .
Leading this Special Event
John Massy , Audience
Development Manager for the Queensland Art Gallery, will accompany you
during this event in conjunction with one of our professional tour guides,
who can help you with interpretation and answer any questions you may
have about Japan.
John is an arts educator and practising artist with a great interest
in the ceramics, culture and arts of Japan. He was also a participant
in our November '99 Tokoname Workshop and Pottery tour and was Tour
Manager on our last tour . John has experienced much of Japan's artistry
during his previous journeys through this fascinating country.
The Queensland Art Gallery, under John's curatorial direction, presented
the exhibition "Living Culture" to celebrate the Sogetsu School of Ikebana
70th Anniversary as well as "Treasures from the Idemitsu Museum of Arts",
and other exhibitions of calligraphy and arts.
The Queensland Art Gallery has the only collection in a public art museum
in Australia illustrating production from all of the six old kiln sites
in Japan, which you will visit on this tour.
Cherry
Blossom Season
You will be seeing Japan
when its springtime blooms are in full colour. Thousands of pink and
white cherry blossoms make this a most picturesque time to visit Japan.
